UPLB is a recognized research and extension university in the country and in Southeast Asia with institutions and a pool of technical experts on various programs related to organic agriculture. The IDSC-OA is one of the UPLB virtual centers established on August 29, 2017 by the UPLB Office of the Chancellor through Administrative Order No. 225 series of 2017 (AO No. 225, s2017). It is mandated to pursue holistic inter- and trans-disciplinary research, development and extension (RDE) programs in organic agriculture. Its operation is carried out by an interdisciplinary team headed by a chair with members coming from various disciplines across UPLB’s colleges.
The creation of the IDSC-OA shows UPLB’s commitment to strengthen science-based knowledge and capacity building needs of various stakeholders to strengthen industry development and inclusive community programs on organic agriculture.
As the National University “committed to serve the Filipino nation and humanity”, UPLB shall be able to relate its activities to the needs of the Filipino people. Gender-responsive and strategic research for the development of methodologies, products, markets, business opportunities and quality standards will contribute to the competitiveness of the Philippine organic industry.
The resulting science-based and verified indigenous knowledge systems generated by the IDSC-OA shall be shared through capability building programs among its partners including regional RDE centers, State Universities and Colleges, other government and non-government organizations, people’s organizations, private sector and the general public for the advancement of a locally-relevant and globally-competitive organic agriculture system in the country.
